2nd Edition by Steve Allin
With the move towards construction techniques that satisfy the energy conservation requirements of both their manufacture and use, many different systems are being promoted to produce what might be described as an eco home. This is the first book to focus on hemp as a construction material. It describes hemp´s history and production, and the ways in which it can be used in the construction or renovation of buildings. With 295 colour photographs and 56 illustrations and diagrams, the book is as equally of interest to the home owner, architect or interior designer, as it is to the self-builder or ecological activist.
Written in a straightforward manner but referring to expert reports and data, the facts and figures for the performance of the hempcrete material (a mixture of hemp-wood and lime) are given together with knowledge gained by the author during his nine years of using the stuff himself. Methods developed by builders and architects in France are described and illustrated, as are examples from Ireland, Great Britain and Switzerland. The basic alternative ways of designing a hemp house by combining timber frames and hempcrete are explained and illustrated with diagrams by the author, as are other systems using blocks or hemp clay mixes.
About the Author
Steve Allin, environmental design consultant, has pioneered the use in Ireland of building with hemp, a breathable natural material that is stirring up considerable interest in the eco-building and conservation worlds. With over 120 different projects in the last nine years having used the material in Ireland and many hundreds in 16 years in France, this revolutionary but simple system has now come of age.

This is neither a glorify-the-weed article from High Times nor an antipolemic from a neo-Nancy Reaganite.
Matthews (The Wild Bunch), an award-winning British writer on wines, presents a straightforward account of what he sees as the culture of cannabis (a culture as discernible as that of wine), including its history, horticulture, politics, and place in society. Let´s face it, though, the stuff is illegal in most of the world, and it´s hard to write dispassionately about such a subject. So, even before the postscript, the reader knows that the author, while conceding such positions as the possibility that marijuana is a gateway to the harder stuff, is not about to advocate spraying cannabis fields with paraquat. A bit too technical in places for lay readers, a bit too British for others, this will still be a good buy for academic and larger public libraries.AJim Burns, Ottumwa P.L., IA

- Jack Herer and Al Emmanuel
This first book, G.R.A.S.S. (1973) by Jack Herer, now internationally celebrated as the "father of the hemp movement" serves as an introduction to "head" culture for a whole new generation of stoners. It´s an amusingly nostalgic look-back at the hippie awareness that shaped the 1960´s and 70´s cultural and social revolution and it´s a coloring book to boot! G.R.A.S.S. is not merely a funked-out time capsule. It is an uppdated guide to quality, price and availability of the versatile and earth-saving cannabis sativa plant ("Pot" to you). Jack Herer´s phenomenal best-seller, "The emperor wears no cloths; the authoritative historical record of cannabis and the conspiracy against marijuana" is the book that literaly created the current hemp/marijuana movement.
Now in an updated 12th edition, "The emperor" put the word Hemp back into common language. Here set the world straight when most of us had forgotten, or never were taught, that marijuana, the "weed that grows in the devil´s garden" was one and the same plant as cannabis hemp; the tree-saving, most annually renewable, fastest-growing, no pesticide needing, absolutely finest and most abundant source of paper, fiber, fuel, fabric, food and machine oil. And all-in-one medicine of any known plant in earth´s recorded history. Now you can enjoy the roots of Jack´s personal crusade in G.R.A.S.S.

A beautifully illustrated book about "growing hemp and lots more" with more then 500 photographs. I Love It pictures Michael Meredith´s experiments, who was determined to grow hemp to provide for his own as well as his family´s needs. All his trials and errors have been elaborately written down and photographed. He tells about his mistakes so something can be learned from them. Not only does he discuss requirements for growing hemp - such as cultivation factors, harvesting, cuttings, etc. - he also describes clearly how to make hemp seed oil, brownies and hemp beer. I love it has become a real bestseller (it has sold more than 60,000 copies worldwide).

Abstract / Description
Hemp, Lifeline to the Future is a comprehensive look at the uses of the plant cannabis sativa, L., which has two forms. The medical variety has flowers that produce marijuana. The industrial variety has virtually no drug content but is a prolific source of high quality vegetable fiber and seed oil. Both types are currently illegal in America, even as farmers in Europe and Asia quietly continue to profit by growing industrial varieties of hemp.
The book opens with a vision: a day in the life of a fictitious couple living in an a hemp house. Then it´s off on a whirlwind tour of 10,000 years of human history, with an emphasis on the United States. It documents that hemp was a major industry for most of the world´s great civilizations and had medical, religious and cultural uses. It shows how the plant´s name suddenly changed from "hemp" to "marihuana" amid hysterical news accounts of a non-existent crime wave just before the entire plant species was banned in 1937. Based on its global survey of hemp today, the book forecasts a multi-billion dollar cannabis revival. It projects the cash crop´s huge economic potential for food, clothing, housing, paper, plastic, energy and more. There is a separate chapter for each of the major uses of hemp, highlighting current technologies that encourage job development and environmental quality. It examines hemp botany, ecology and farming techniques.
Hemp, Lifeline to the Future sorts through the massive research surrounding cannabis health issues and demonstrates both its therapeutic value and relative safety compared to other drugs. It evaluates the federal anti-marijuana data in terms of scientific methodology and stated conclusions. It unmasks a group of special interests and government agencies who distort the evidence to maintain arbitrary and excessive political power. The book studies the shifting tides of cannabis policy in the wake of prohibition, corruption, asset forfeitures, police abuse, prisons and soaring costs. Finally, it looks at private sector options and considers what steps to take as individuals, communities and society as a whole. There are only a few books that deal with this important topic, and none does a better job of it. Heavily documented and footnoted, packed with practical tips and statistical data to back up every point, Hemp, Lifeline to the Future is a must-read book that sets the record straight. Conrad concludes that responsible business interests responds to community markets and concerns better than government agencies, and that a legally regulated adult market in marijuana will effectively end the criminal underground market and protect children.
